Devices and the Cooley Comics app

Rochester Public LibraryCentral Library, Monroe County, NY

Creating shouldn't stop when the session ends. Library laptops and our web app let participants keep going at home.

By the numbers

  • 12 laptops provided directly to participants by the Central Library
  • 48 workshop accounts created on the Cooley Comics web app
  • 31 of 48 returned after their first session
  • 19 completed at least one project outside facilitated time

“People reached” is our projected community reach: the midpoint of our estimate of everyone the program touched beyond the people in the room, such as families, classmates, colleagues and neighbors.

Through the Central Library's digital literacy initiative, participants in Cooley Comics programs received devices to support continued learning, so they had the tools to keep creating outside structured sessions.

Our web app means a story started in a workshop can be finished at home. And because devices go home, whole households benefit: job searches, schoolwork and staying connected.

Having a device at home made it easier to keep working on my project. If I didn't have this I wouldn't be able to do this kind of work because I would have to go to the library everyday, and that's just not possible for me.
